How Often Do You Use CBD?

Since CBD (or cannabidiol) became legal by the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD products are becoming a huge trend in retail, with a lot of consumers turning to it to help with a variety of health conditions and their overall well-being. Twenty-eight percent of consumers, according to an Acosta report, are presently using CBD products on an "as-needed" or daily basis.

Health conditions that don't have a "one-size-fits-all treatment" are very common and it's important across all age groups to avoid chemicals when it comes to self-care and health, said Colin Stewart, SVP, business intelligence at Acosta. The sales and projections for CBD show consumers are using CBD more and more for help, and the demand is growing quickly.

Males, millennials, and individuals with four-year degrees are presently the main CBD demographics. Individuals who reported "as-needed" or daily use of CBD include:

  • Millennials (56 percent)
  • Gen X (32 percent)
  • Boomers (15 percent)
  • Men (48 percent)
  • Individuals with a bachelor's degree (49 percent)

Mental health, pain, and general wellness are main reasons for usage, with certain health conditions varying between generations. Millennials most commonly use CBD for:

  • General wellness (30 percent)
  • Anxiety (31 percent)

Gen X and Boomers use them for:

  • Joint pain (31 percent and 36 percent)
  • Muscle pain (23 percent for both)

Fifty-nine percent of individuals who bought CBD for the first time had the plan to buy it already, and 25 percent did so on impulse. Out of first time users, seven percent were recommended by a doctor to do so.

When asked for their perspective on CBD:

  • Fifty-five percent of individuals claimed CBD oil is/could be a new miracle treatment.
  • Thirty-five percent said they weren't sure what to think of CBD oil.
  • Eleven percent said CBD oil is simply hype.

Those who didn't use CBD who are open to trying it said one of the biggest barriers for usage were lack of studies, price, and distrust in claims.

One in 10 pet owners said they bought CBD products for their pets. Fifty-two percent of these consumers made their purchase based off their veterinarian's recommendation.

Top reasons for using CBD were:

  • General wellness (29 percent)
  • Anxiety (32 percent)
  • Pain (29 percent)

The leading pet CBD products are:

  • Topical ointment (nine percent)
  • Capsules (14 percent)
  • Oil (27 percent)
  • Chews/treats (48 percent)

A lot of retailers remain unclear about the regulatory guidelines for labeling and sale of hemp-containing products, despite a variety of CBD offerings continuing to make their way into stores. Research on the potential health benefits of CBD is still in its early stages.
