CBD Pillow and Your Sleep Cycle
People use CBD for various reasons, including anxiety, seizures, and pain. There are even studies, which you'll see below, that show it helps with sleep and your sleep cycles.
What Is Your Sleep Cycle and How Does It Work?
Sleep cycles are a part of your internal biological clock. They're the regularly occurring brain wave patterns that occur while you sleep. Sleep cycles often last approximately 90 minutes to a couple hours, where your brain cycles from a slow-wave sleep into a REM sleep in which you experience dreams.
Because your sleep cycles regularly occur every 90 minutes or so, you really only experience about four to six of them in a seven- to nine-hour sleeping night. So, it's important you schedule certain wake up times to ensure your brain wakes up at a right stage during its sleep cycle, and that you wake up feeling refreshed.
You cycle through the different stages of REM and non-REM sleep a few times each night. Toward the mornings, your REM periods of sleep become increasingly deeper and longer.
Stages of Sleep
You go through four stages of sleep:
Stage 1: This is a non-REM sleep stage where you go from wakefulness to sleep. In this brief period of light sleep, which lasts only a few minutes, you begin to experience:
- Slowed breathing
- Slowed heartbeat
- Slowed eye movements
- Relaxed muscles with occasional twitches
Your brain waves start slowing from its patterns of daytime wakefulness.
Stage 2: This is also a non-REM sleep stage, in which you experience light sleep prior to entering deeper sleep. In this stage, your breathing, heartbeat, and muscles start to slow and relax even further. Your eye movements stop, and your body temperature drops. The activity of your brain waves slows, but is marked by short electrical activity bursts. It's in stage 2 sleep that you spend more of your repeated sleep cycles than you do in any other sleep stages.
Stage 3: Also non-REM sleep, this stage of sleep is the deep sleep period you require in order to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed. It occurs during the first half of the night in longer periods. Your breathing and heartbeat slow to their lowest levels while you sleep. Your muscles are totally relaxed, and it can be hard to wake you up at this point. Your brain waves slow down even more.
REM Sleep: You experience this stage of sleep typically around 90 minutes after you fall asleep. Your eyes rapidly move back and forth behind closed eyelids. Your mixed frequency brain waves become closer to those seen during wakefulness. You begin experiencing irregular and faster breathing, and your blood pressure and heart rate increase to almost waking levels. You experience most of your dreaming during this stage of sleep.
Studies on CBD and How it Affects your Sleep
Researchers found your endocannabinoid system (ECS) helps maintain specific body functions like:
- Appetite
- Mood
- Regulating circadian rhythms
- Sleep
Within your ECS, you have a network of cannabinoid receptors in your central nervous system and brain. The two main receptors are CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Cannabinoids attach themselves to these cells, providing a variety of effects. As far as how they might impact your sleep, some studies indicate the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) might interact with certain receptors, possibly impacting your sleep-wake cycle.
There's also evidence showing CBD could be useful in managing anxiety. If you have anxiety, and it's creating your sleep problem, CBD might benefit you.
A 2017 review published in the journal Current Psychiatry Reports suggests CBD might also impact your sleep directly by interacting with your brain's receptors that govern your body's daily sleep-wake cycles.
How a CBD Pillow Can Help With Your Sleep Cycle
CBD pillows are infused with a type of microencapsulation technology in which millions of CBD capsules are embedded in the pillows. Unlike edibles or topicals, the pillows' CBD is slowly released during the night.
The capsules burst through the friction, and slowly release high-quality micro-doses of CBD. The CBD is then absorbed into your skin and hair follicles directly to help regulate your sleep throughout the night evenly. You result with a relaxing calm, so you experience better quality sleep.
